A bucolic landscaping of the Trianon gardens, the Hameau de la Reine is an integral part of the Domaine de Marie-Antoinette. Timeless, far from the tumult of the Palace, this place exalts the imagination.
In 1783, Marie-Antoinette commissioned her architect Richard Mique to build this magnificent ensemble of rustic buildings. Completed in 1786 along an artificial lake, the hamlet, though inspired by various rural architectural styles, conveys a remarkable sense of harmony.
For the queen, it was a place for receptions and leisurely strolls. This small rural village included ornamental buildings such as the mill (purely decorative), the boudoir, and the Queen’s House, as well as working farmhouses intended for agricultural activity, which also had an educational purpose.
The farm, damaged by time, was restored in 2006 and is now occupied by the Animal Welfare Foundation (*Fondation Assistance aux Animaux*).
